Here’s another clergy cover-up technique that sets an organization up for failure. It is the inability to recognize the potential danger of abuse in the church and pro-actively preparing to handle the situation properly. From the book:

“Lack of accountability of senior leaders, blocks access to those with questions, powerlessness on the part of elders; and the absence of pro-active training of the church body sets up the perfect storm for the church to fail. A true shepherd avoids the train wreck by acting upon his legal and moral liability as senior minister, making him accountable to his flock. He allows his circle of elders and board members to hold his feet to the coals. He demands transparency and truth from himself and his staff. He diligently educates people of the congregation to recognize aberrant behavior. He makes sure they understand the reporting statutes and reviews them periodically with not only church staff, but also church members. He does all he can to prevent derailment.” (Taylor, Joy S., Clergy Cover-up Does It Work?, Lily of the Valley Publishing Services, 2024, Indiana, p. 29)
