Let’s shed some light on how accountability works in the cycle of abuse. From the book:

“I’m learning about the divide in tyrannical governing. I’ve mentioned the duality of power, but there is also a hierarchy of accountability. The abusive minister sets a different standard for himself in that he is the chosen one, God’s representative, and the anointed one that sits on the earthly throne of piety. He mirrors the behavior of the Pharisees. He sees himself above reproach and untouchable. What he does is the right and only way to do something. If you quote his own words to him, he finds a way to knock you down by stating that’s not right, ‘what I really said was….’ He is the conductor on this train to heaven, and you must acknowledge that with all due deference. Rules for the membership do not apply to him, because he makes the rules and is therefore above their reach.” (Taylor, Joy S., Clergy Cover-up Does it Work?, Lily of the Valley Publishing Services, 2024, Indiana, p. 28.)
