Drops of Joy – A Devotional Journey of Healing — Update 20
The value of hearing other people’s stories is more than gathering facts. The compelling worth comes from what we learn from them that we can apply to our own story. The devotions I developed from my testimony are a tribute to how Jesus healed my wounds and taught me to see myself as He sees me. Maybe a piece of my story can help you understand and heal while you work through your own story. Are you learning to see yourself as God sees you?
From the book:
“Is learned invisibility a thing? Do we develop a skill to hover below the level of being noticed as a defense mechanism? Is it a conscious effort, or is it a natural reaction? Even as a kid, I have been passed over, looked through, and not recognized as a person. Some of that is just everyday ignorance on the part of people. But most of it I ascribe to a learned technique, a protective device if you will. Those who grow up in families where there is disruption, yelling, throwing things, fear, and unsettled discord tend toward two coping methods. One is to become a people pleaser who does everything possible to keep the feared one appeased. It is conflict avoidance at all costs. The other mechanism is to keep a low profile in order to stay out of the fray.
“I put both techniques into practice over the years. I’d be interested to know how many of you have had similar experiences. See, both methods seemed to work for me, but they put me into a state of denial that nothing was wrong; I just wasn’t invisible enough. I just wasn’t pleasing enough. There’s a problem with that. Can you see it? My thinking was backwards,
because conflict avoidance only brings on more conflict. Invisibility only diminished my value in the eyes of those I feared, and eventually in my own eyes. There is some validity in the adage that people tend to treat you as you treat yourself. I began feeling alone, lonely, and isolated.” (Taylor, Joy S., Drops of Joy – A Devotional Journey of Healing, 2026, Lily of the Valley Publishing Services, Indiana, p. 46)

Joy S Taylor is a follower of Christ, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her workdays were spent using the Master of Science in Accounting degree that God graciously allowed at the age of, well, greater than 40. She led a divorce recovery support group sponsored by her church for seven years, and spent more than a decade in leadership roles for Celebrate Recovery and Care Net, using what God had done in her life to point others to the healing only Jesus gives. Now retired, she concentrates on writing for Jesus from her beloved hickory grove in Indiana, yet devotes some of her time to volunteering.
